NY 5 Corridor Land Use and Transportation Study

Albany/Schenectady, NY

The Route 5 Corridor (the Corridor) was historically the major regional transportation corridor in the Capital District of New York State, linking its primary central cities.  Over the last 50 years, the construction of the Interstates, the suburbanization of residential and retail development, and the low levels of economic growth in the region have all eroded the vitality of the Corridor and the central cities.  With this in mind, the Capital District Transportation Committee and the Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Capital District commissioned a study with the ultimate goal of identifying feasible, stakeholder-supported revitalization options for the Corridor, including land use, transportation, financial, and legal policy options.

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, EPS's primary research/analytical efforts included (1) a market assessment of the Corridor; and (2) key stakeholder interviews.  These efforts, which produced a report and a number of working papers, were critical to the conduct of the study in ensuring that revitalization options considered and selected were based on market and political realities.
